Part-time Program
PART-TIME PROGRAM OVERVIEW
STETSON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LAW
PART-TIME PROGRAM

Entering Class: We enroll new part-time evening students in the fall of every year. Full-time students are admitted in the spring and fall of each year.

Location: The College of Law's main campus is in Gulfport, FL. However, students will also take classes at the new Tampa Law Center, located in downtown Tampa. Part-time law students will take 18 of the 88 credit hours in Tampa. These credits are spread over the first five semesters. In addition to law classrooms, the building also has a law library, a courtroom classroom and administrative offices. The Tampa home of the Florida Second District Court of Appeal is located in the Tampa Law Center. The judges' chambers and offices for their law clerks and support staff are located here. The Court holds oral arguments in the Stetson courtroom classroom.

Length of Program: Students in the part-time program can complete the degree in four years by attending classes during each Fall, Spring, and Summer semester. Students who enter the part-time program have the option to switch into the full-time program after two years (5 semesters).

Application Requirements and Procedures: Application requirements and procedures will be the same as for the full-time J.D. program. Those requirements and procedures are outlined in our current Viewbook and on the Admissions Web page at the College of Law's web site at: http://www.law.stetson.edu/admissions/.

Basic Program Design and Curriculum: During the first two years, students will take two or three classes each fall and spring semester and two classes during each summer semester. During the fall and spring semesters, students will typically attend classes Monday through Thursday from approximately 6:00 p.m. until approximately 9:00 p.m. During the summer semesters, students will typically attend classes Monday through Thursday from approximately 6:00 p.m. until approximately 9:00 p.m. During the third and fourth years, students can expect a similar schedule, but will have more flexibility in selecting elective courses.

The required curriculum will be virtually identical to that taken by full-time students. Members of Stetson's full-time faculty will teach required courses; elective courses will be taught by members of the full-time faculty and by highly qualified adjunct professors.

Part-time students will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, such as law review, student government, and various clubs and student legal organizations.

Final Two Years

From their second Summer session through their fourth Spring semester, students will be free to take electives and to complete the following graduation area requirements: skills course, administrative law course, code course, and upper-level writing course. Students will be able to select courses from throughout the curriculum, including morning, afternoon, evening, Friday, or Saturday courses. Evening courses typically have starting times of 5:30 or later. Students will have the flexibility to create schedules that meet their needs; for example, students can opt out of Saturday classes or can take classes on only two or three evenings.

Elective courses will be offered on the Gulfport campus. Students should take from 8 to 10 credits in Fall and Spring semesters, and from 5 to 7 credits in Summer semesters. Students need 88 credits to graduate. For further details, please review the notes associated with the class schedule corresponding to the appropriate entering year.
