April 12, 2002: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A team of law students from Glasgow, Scotland won the Louis M. Brown International Client Counseling Competition, held April 4-6 at Stetson University College of Law. Edward McAvinchey and Kathleen Carlin from the Centre for Professional Legal Studies at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, won the international competition, which included teams from 12 countries. The winning team was coached by Professor Robert Watson, and was assisted at the competition by Michael Graham. McAvinchey and Carlin won scholarships, which will pay for half of the tuition costs to Stetson's Master of Law program in International Law and Business. Attorneys and counselors judged the competition, which required each team to counsel a fictional client on a problem related to international law. Stetson and Professor Rebecca Morgan were applauded for coordinating this international competition. "Through her reputation and nationwide contacts, Professor Morgan was able to attract the most qualified judges in the history of the Louis M. Brown International Client Counseling Competition," said Forrest S. Mosten, executive chair of the competition. Stetson University College of Law is Florida's first law school. It has educated lawyers for more than 100 years, and offers continuing legal education programs for regional, state, national and international audiences. Stetson tied for first place in Trial Advocacy in the 2003 U.S. News and World Report rankings of law schools.
