November 7, 2002: Gulfport, Fla., - Stetson University College of Law will receive $700,000 to educate Florida seniors about consumer fraud as a result of a settlement negotiated by the Florida Attorney General's office.
"This award is a significant complement to our Center for Excellence in Elder Law. It will allow us to create a statewide education program to help protect our elderly residents from becoming victims of fraud," said Dean Gary Vause.
Stetson University College of Law will receive $700,000 of a $950,000 settlement reached between the Attorney General's Office and a Delaware-based firm that faced allegations of deception. The announcement was made Monday by then-Attorney General Bob Butterworth.
Professor Rebecca Morgan is the director of Stetson's Center for Excellence in Elder Law. "Fraud concerning the elderly continues to be a serious and growing problem in Florida." Morgan added that Stetson's program would educate senior consumers on how to spot fraud, how to avoid becoming a victim of consumer fraud and what actions to take if they become victims.
