Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. obtained the B.S. degree from the University of South Carolina and the J.D. with high honors from the University of Florida College of Law. While at the University of South Carolina, he was quarterback of the team which participated in the first Gator Bowl game. At the University of Florida he was graduated first in his class, was President of the Student Bar Association, was Editor-in-Chief of the University of Florida Law Review, and was a member of Florida Blue Key. He also attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He joined the Tampa firm of Carlton, Fields, Ward, Emmanuel, Smith & Cutler in 1953 and has been a member of that firm since then. He taught as an Adjunct Professor at the Stetson College of Law from 1954-57. He has served terms as President of The Florida Bar, President of the American Bar Association, and President of the International Bar Association. He also served as President of the University of South Florida. He has been involved in numerous public service activities and has received many awards, including honorary LL.D., D.C.L., D.H.L. and D.B.A. degrees from 11 colleges and universities, and the first annual Wm. Reece Smith Jr. Public Service Award from the Stetson University College of Law. He is also the recipient of the American Bar Association’s Gold Medal which is "rarely given" for "exceptionally distinguished service to the cause of American jurisprudence" and the ABA Pro Bono Publico Award for enhancement of legal services to the poor. He is a current member of the Council of the American Law Institute.
