MOOT COURT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition
A Stetson team won the Best Memorial award and student Eric Koenig received the Third Place Oralist award at the regional stage of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition Feb. 26-27. In addition to Koening, the award-winning team consisted of students Bryan Schiller, Kathryn Christian, Alicia Koepke and Amanda Jassem. The team was coached by several individuals, including Professor Richard Graves, moot court alumnus Chris Donovan and Stetson LL.M. student, Dan Coll. The team advanced to the semi-finals in the competition, and it was the second consecutive year Stetson won the Best Memorial award. "What is particularly impressive about the memorial award is that these students had to write two briefs, and combined they were the best," said Professor Stephanie Vaughan, moot court adviser. "This is the second year in a row that we have taken home this trophy." The Jessup competition is the largest moot court competition in the world. It is in its 46th year, and currently more than 500 law schools from more than 80 countries participate. Besides the various American regional competitions, there are also regional competitions in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom.
National Civil Rights, ABA Regional Moot Court and National Securities Law
Three Stetson Moot Court teams were active the weekend of March 5-6. Stetson's team in the National Civil Rights Competition in Minneapolis lost in the finals to the University of California at Davis. Stetson's team consisted of Vincent Beilman, Holly Keyser and Lavern Wilson. They were coached by Professor Ann Piccard. This is the third time in four years that a Stetson team made it into the finals in this competition. "It is a tremendous accomplishment," Vaughan said. The ABA Regional Moot Court team of Sarah Lahlou-Amine, Woody Pollack and Zack Zuroweste advanced to the semi-finals of this competition in New Orleans. Professors Michael Allen and Jim Underwood coached this team. "Top four in such a prestigious competition is something to be very proud of," Vaughan said. Stetson advanced to the semi-finals of the National Securities Law Moot Court Competition in New York City. The team of Brandon Crossland, Jeff Goodloe and Christine Sala was coached by Professor Joe Morrissey. "This is the first time in many years that we have sent a team to this competition, and being in the top four is incredible," Vaughan said. Vaughan also recognized the large amount of work members of all the teams put into preparation for these competitions. "Their hard work and dedication make us consistently well-known and hard-to-beat in competitions around the country," she said.
