"I transferred to Stetson in 2006. My experience with the admissions staff was unforgettable. I called every single day to check on the status of my application and the staff did not mind. After being accepted, I drove from Daytona to Gulfport just to meet the faces behind the phones. To this day, I enjoy visiting with the admissions staff and keeping them updated on my success at Stetson."

Transfer Applicants

Thank you for your interest as a transfer applicant to Stetson University College of Law. Transfer applicants must submit the regular admissions application along with a $55 non-refundable application fee. All applicants must be in good standing and eligible to return to their current law school. For both our part-time and full-time programs, transfer applicants are required to have earned one full year of credit, or the equivalent of at least 29 credit hours, at an ABA- or state-approved law school. The following documents are required for the transfer application:
  1. a complete official transcript from the law school previously attended;
  2. Law School Data Assembly Service report (Stetson College of Law will request a copy from LSDAS); and
  3. official documentation from the Dean of the applicant's previous law school confirming the applicant's current standing and law school rank.
The deadlines for transfer applications are July 1 for the fall term, and November 1 for the spring term. All files must be complete by the deadline in order to be considered. However, please feel free to submit your application in advance of the deadline. Files are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Stetson University College of Law will consider the applicant's academic achievement at his or her current law school, the reason for requesting to transfer, the applicant's undergraduate grades, the LSAT scores, available space at the College of Law, and may consider other relevant factors. Any existing disciplinary records will also be part of the evaluation process.

We typically accept a limited number of qualified transfer applicants. The College of Law may accept up to 29 credits from an ABA- or state-approved U.S. law school. The number of credits which will transfer to Stetson University College of Law may not match the number of actual credits received at the previous law school. Transfer students generally receive credit only for traditional first-year courses offered at Stetson University College of Law, and only the amount of credits awarded by our institution for those courses. The decision on transfer credits is made by the Associate Dean of Academics.

Transfer students must meet all the graduation requirements set forth by the College of Law, including all required courses (both first-year and upper-level), four area requirements, and a minimum of 88 credits. The Associate Dean will determine to what extent courses taken at the original institution will transfer to meet any of these requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions by Transfer Applicants:
  1. How do transfer students register for classes?

Upon acceptance, you will work with the Associate Dean of Academics and the Registrar's Office to establish your class schedule for your first semester and for remaining required classes. You will bid for future semester courses along with your classmates and receive priority in classes based upon your anticipated graduation date.

  2. Can credits from a previous graduate degree transfer toward the J.D. program?

No. Only credits taken at an ABA- or state-approved law school may count toward the J.D. Transfer credits will be evaluated on an individual basis.

  3. Do transfer students qualify for financial aid and scholarships?

Transfer students are ineligible for scholarships upon enrollment. However, they may apply for continuing student scholarships once they are enrolled.

Transfer students are eligible for Financial Aid. Please review the information on the
    Financial Aid page for details.

  4. Do transfer students have full access to the Career Development Office?

Yes! Admissions provides Career Development with a list of incoming transfer students so they are prepared to work with you in the career search with on-campus interviews, counseling, etc.

  5. Are transfer students permitted to participate in extra-curricular activities?

Yes! Transfer students are invited to participate in a diverse collection of experiences on campus such as nearly 40 student clubs and organizations, leadership programming (leading to a Leadership Development Certificate at graduation), legal and non-legal pro bono community service activities, intramural sports, etc.

Activities also include Law Review, Moot Court, Mock Trial Teams, Client Skills Board, Internships and Clinics. New transfer students may seek to participate in these activities along with current students.

  6. What are the eligibility requirements for Law Review if you are a transfer student?

For general information on the Stetson Law Review, Stetson's primary academic legal journal, please visit the Law Review's website at http://www.law.stetson.edu/lawrev/. Select "Informational Brochure" for eligibility requirements and membership details.

Eligibility to compete in Stetson Law Review's Write-on Competition in the first semester of enrollment will be determined by looking at class rank at the prior institution. Students in at least the top one-third of the class at the prior institution will be eligible to compete. In all subsequent semesters, only grades and rankings at Stetson University College of Law will be considered for eligibility requirements.

Transfer students may also seek to participate in Stetson's other academic journals.

  7. When are tryouts for the Advocacy Board and are transfers eligible?

Tryouts are in the fall of each year. Transfers are eligible to try out if they meet the requirements. Each team has different case requirements. Please refer to the Centers for Excellence pages for eligibility requirements.
